I decided to take only my GoPro and iPhone on my hiking trip in Washington State (iphone can wirelessly control and view images from the GoPro) . To address power issues, I purchased an external battery that had a solar panel on it. This way, I could charge the battery and charge the GoPro and the phone. It worked great! I was even more impressed how the GoPro did. Of course, it's not going to be good as your DSLR but it still looks amazing. I don't think that many non-photographers could tell a difference. It also cut down on weight which is important on a 3 day hike. Smaller and lighter, the better!
